You are wise to stop over. We live in Lancashire and have travelled down the M6 on previous years to the show. It normally takes about 2 hours.
It all came unstuck in 2012 when there was an accident which caused a massive tailback. We ended up arriving at 2pm, instead of a planned 1100am, had to get lunch quickly then dashed around the show in 2 hours or so before driving back home - a disaster which has put us off going since.
It's a great show though and I'd love to get back there one year and staying over sounds like the way to go.
We would normally go to Chelsea which is relativity close but have found it so commercialised now and lost that small garden feel which we love so much,
Monty Don touched on the subject in the summer and i whole heartedly agreed with his views and thought we that we would have a change and see what the GW team have to offer, hope it's good.

A great show , I have been several times over the years would really recommend it
Last time I went it was combined with The Good Food Show , a long day if you are to do it justice
It is close to Birmingham Airport so there are lots of a Hotels and a really good train link to the centre of Birmingham , also huge car parks
Can't wait now, seems like a long time to go.
as I only live thirty miles away I think I will be going to the show
thank you for the post Stephen, I may well have missed it
Clueless

We love the Southport Flower Show.
Booking.com is also a useful link. I used it earlier this year to find a good well run, reasonably priced B&B for an overnight stay in Lincoln.
