I have just seen the end of carol Klein talking about root cuttings. When do you do these and how?? Can I from a plant only planted this year??

Autumn/early winter is the time but I don't think I'd attack something that's not fully established
In the sticks near Peterborough
Do you think is too late?? Should I scrape back the soil and see or leave it be and hope it sets seed. I think I get greedy when I know I can multiply plants.
