Buddleja davidii- prunning

I have a rather pathetic looking a self seeded Buddleja which was cut right down a few years back (as it had become very over grown) this left a 2-3ft tall trunk with a few sparse stem. I want to fix it so it'll will grow into a more convetional shape. and thought i could saw the trunk to ground level to see if i can get it to send up some new stems. but i'm not sure if this would destroy the plant (i am aware i can prune it now and i can be pretty brutal). any ideas?

8 years is a long wait for an answer, I expect the problem is sorted by now :)

    How rude.
Have you any idea how many queries there are every day on this forum @andy morris?
The vast majority are answered - often very intensively. There's also a search facility, so perhaps the OP used that instead. It's not an unusual query after all.
To get the hump and say that people are 'easily pleased' is totally unnecessary.

If you find the site so poor, there are other gardening forums.

  • I see that all of @andymorris ‘s threads have been answered (for free) and he’s had some free honeysuckle cuttings from a member; he keeps coming back so we can’t have done that badly 🙄

It might also be worth pointing out that the forum in 2012 was a very different set up, with many glitches, and occasionally despite our best efforts a few posts did get lost. A lot of time, money and effort has been put into improving the forum and whilst it’s not perfect it is immeasurably better than it was ... some of us gave up our time for consultations and testing before this new board went live.
So given that you seem happy to accept what is freely and happily given
    ... why whinge?
