When to prune a mature Magnolia Tree ?
I need advice about a very large and mature Magnolia that has only ever had lower branches pruned for lawn mower access. Now the leaves are falling it is obvious that some recent growth is crossing over and needs removing. When should this be done? I tend to think after flowering, but this last year it has had a second flush of flowers that were really appreciated.

RHS has lots of advice here http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=599
Definitely only light pruning or watershoots result, and prune in late summer early autumn.

Thanks Dove, I posted because each time I tried RHS websites they crashed. Old steam fired thing I run.
Can you get there from that link - if not I'll try to cut and paste the relevant bits
