Well, don't do what I did a few years ago. Found a lovely old chimney pot in a skip, asked permission to take it and stood it outside our front door. Planted a bay tree in it and trained it into a standard. When we came to move later on of course, it had rooted into the soil so I had to leave both bay and pot behind, much to my sorrow. It's still there though, although the house has been sold on several times.
@Lizzie27 - I have long pondered on filling chimney pots and using them as baseless pots to give height to a standard or tree. I'm glad to hear your bay tree was happy in it. Yes, it would end up as a permanant, non movable feature, unless you were prepared to cut the roots from the ground. I wondered if there would be enough earth in a regular chimney pot for roots of a tree to be happy until it found the ground. I guess the answer is "yes".
