pruning a mountain ash

  • Our Mountain ash is very tall and spindly. I would like it to fill out but I'm unsure if I can cut the trunk down. I'm not much of a gardener so I need some advice. image

We have two Mt ash that are 10 yrs old but not just one tree, a handful as I wanted a screen from the neighbors. We cut them back to 10' tall about 3 times a yr. Wherever you cut, it shoots out several more so is very full and wonderful. The mature trees in front we never cut and now probably 40 yrs old and very full of berries. Messy but the birds usually take care of the berries starting from the top down. I leave a few grow around the yard each yr as they are wonderful to pull up and put into a bouquet for the nursing home as they keep going for a long time or some visitor can take it home and plant it.
