Bottle Garden, any thoughts

Hi All

I'm sitting here reading up on how to create a bottle garden and I wonder if anyone can give me advice on what plants to buy from the garden centre.

I have a medium size round, tinted green glass bottle. I will not be doing this until next spring/summer.

I have a terrarium, so not completely enclosed, but ferns, ivy and parlour palms do well in mineimage

  • Your best bet will be to use a variety of small ferns, as they will cope best with the low light levels and high humidity.  They also grow relatively slowly and won't need pruning too often.

Avoid flowering plants as the dead blossoms will rot which will spread in the bottle garden.

Make sure you put plenty of coarse grit in the bottom of the bottle to ensure good drainage at the roots.

Thanks Dovefromabove for your useful tips and advice as always. I'm quite looking forward to setting one of these up.
