insect bites
when sweeping leaves under pergola covered in wisteria, am always bitten by insect which looks like fleas, small and black. We have no pets, what can I do please?

You could use an insect repellent - Boots do one called Repel Once which works well for me.
good advice from landgirl. There are all manner of biting insects in gardens. I wouldn't venture out in mine in the summer without insect repellent and even later in the year can get some painful surprises. Got a really painful spider bite once and mozzies just love me. It might be some kind of gnat or even midges. I often light a citronella candle when I am working in a shady or obviously buggy area.
Gaynor, I've looked where you live, I wouldn't have thought you'd be getting bitten this time of year. Is it just your hands or all exposed places? Are you sure they are bites and not a reaction to something you touch, even if black midge things are evident ?
I think sometimes we disturb these biters in the winter. They want to be dormant but we wake them up just enough to bite or sting. I've had some really good bites in the winter.
Not likely to be fleas though.
