Lonicera Periclymenum (Late Dutch Honeysuckle) pruning

Hello,
We have this enormous plant in our garden which needs to be drastically pruned back as it has gone ugly. We moved in 4 yrs ago and the plant was there before us for a while I think so don't know how old it is. The main trunk looks tired and was wondering just how much can I prune it down to 'start again' without killing the plant? And also when is it best to do this?
