I personally like violas better than pansies , surprised that they have sold out , I was at our local B & Q on Wednesday and they had plenty
  • I was told you don't have to deadhead Violas like you do Pansies. Is this true? I would make them hassle free!

  • If I'm growing violas in borders then I don't deadhead them and let them self-sow, but if I've got them in pots on the terrace then I do deadhead them as they look a bit smarter that way.  I'm not sure whether that encourages them to flower more prolifically, as I've not grown the same violas in the two different placesimage

I have violas, pansies and cyclemen (hardy ones) out in pots, the Spring and Summer bulbs planted under them. Why don't you get some chooks, they're fab (if you remember to protect your plants that is lol ) image

Thanks for all your comments and advice! In the end, I ordered some winter pansies online (plantmenow.co.uk - would use again) - went for a red and white theme.

I went for larger flowers, as I prefer them in winter. I thought they'd be more low-maintenance. However, thanks for all advice about violas - I had never come across them before, but will definitely get some in the spring. I love the idea of an orange/yellow combo.
