Constance Spry, although spectacular and perfumed, only flowers once. David Austin have developed new varieties from it which repeat flower and are more disease resistant. Gertrude Jekyll, the climbing version, is a good one.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Busy have book marked gertie, just have to wait till next year and get OH to build pergola! Obviously it depends on the size but do you think I need a rose each end of pergolaa or more?
Constance Spry only flowers once, but it is very special when it does! I have it growing up the upright post of a pergola, with New Dawn going over the top. They are different pinks, but go well together. My Mum was a Constance, so it is one of my most treasured plants.
Gertrude Jekyll has a wonderfu scent that carries a long way - love that one too.
Chicky do you think one plant each end would be enough or do you need two each end (one plant per end post) l know we haven't even built it yet but was thinking of one plant each end.
I have new dawn going up a wall,it was one of my mums favourites. So could possibly get another for pergola with another variety. I
I have a Conctance S up each of the front posts, and 2New Dawns at the back to grow up and over and meet in the middle. This is year 3 and the NDs are just starting to cover the top.

Constance Spry at Mottisfont is a very big plant, although of course you can keep in check with pruning to whatever size you want.
I also have areally pretty one form Beales called 'Narrow Water'
I forgot I had it as it is fairly new, it is very pretty and alovely scent. Again small flowers.
The superfairy rambling varieties are v. good too.... they are repeaters, with loads/sprays of small flowers... very unusual in a rambler.
