I remember a group of us on the old Beeb boards deciding to grow certain seeds and report back. Most had trouble getting good germination rates with monarda, cleome and heuchera Metal shades.

And very often what is hard for one person is easy for another. Take Hepatica, I cannot get it to germinate, even straight off the plant and into the compost, nothing. Yet a friend, doing the same as I do, gets it to come up like Cress.
Im sure someone on here will know this, but I cant remember, that there are some seeds that require a double period of stratification. So warm / cold / warm / cold. I seem to remember that 1st.stratification leads to shoot formation and the 2nd up to a year later forms roots.
I hope this makes some sense. Is it trilliums maybe?
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
There are some lilies which form roots before they have a leaf above ground.
Epigeal germination means above ground and hypogeal means below ground. Then to go with them there is immediate and delayed emergence. Look them up for a full explanation.
Can never get Verbena boriensis to grow - I just buy them as plugs.
Yellow rattle can be difficult to get going. It needs really short grass, some uncovered soil and stratification (cold spell then warmth) to germinate and grow. It's a really interesting native wildflower. It gets most of its food from grass roots so its unlike almost every other plant - they produce their food by photosynthesis alone.
Yellow rattle gets its name from the seed pods that rattle with seeds.

I've had rosemary and heuchera self seed, so I guess fresh seed is easier than stored seed.
Fresh seed is always reliable. I often wonder how and how long bought seed has been stored

I tried hard (believe me) with a packet of Phlox paniculata seeds, and they just
rotted away.
