Steephill - those are lovely pix. The Cobbler's quite famous for climbers - using those sections that you show - especially in winter conditions. Do you miss it? You can't be that old if you were a teenager in the 80s! image

chicky - do you have a path through that or is it just 'make your own way'?  It still looks quite pleasantly autumnal. Everything gets quite bleached and yellow here by December.

Fairy - there are paths through and round.  A few small hills around too but mostly down if you see what I mean - ie the commons are the top bit, then there are quite a few gorge type features to walk down into (and back out of) - so the "Hindhead Alps" are sort of a reverse mountain range (but much too small to be mountains). In the second half of the 1800's people used to move here from London to recover from TB, coz the air was so much better .....thats how we ended up with the area's most famous resident Arthur Conan Doyle (just watched Sherlock, so it seemed kind of appropriate to share).

Love your snow capped peaks - it must be great having them on your doorstepimage

Can't take credit for this photo - but it shows the biggest of the "reverse mountains" - the Devil's Punchbowl.  You start at the top where the photo is taken, then go to the bottom then out the other side!  Keeps the lungs activeimage

That's a lovely pic chicky - thanks for explaining. image

I'm very lucky having so many of the hills relatively nearby. You're right about the fresh air, and living in a town at that time must have been vile in terms of air quality. We all complain about the weather - I'm no exception - but the truth is, I'd hate to live in  a country that didn't have wet and cold as well as sun. It's what makes the beautiful landscape we have.  When the girls eventually leave home and I'm retired ( imageimageimage) I want to move further north - Perthshire perhaps. Really central for lots of hills image

What a wonderfully varied little country we all live in - sea and sky.

Pat you can have some of our rain if you like, we don't seem to be going a day without it raining, not giving me much time to get in the garden.image
