Parsnip problem

The canker is on the shoulders of the vegetable. Can anyone suggest a preventative cure for this problem.

  • The only thing I know of is to grow varieties which are less prone to canker.  My pet theory is that at least some canker-looking damage may actually be caused by carrot fly which are also atracted to parsnips so fleecing them may help.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks Bob the gardener. Yes, your theory/ suggestion seems logical. Thanks

Bob the gardeners theory is borne out by my experience this year as I planted my parsnip alongside carrots which were seriously affected by carrot fly (though supposed to be a resistant variety) and unusually my parsnips were damaged though just slightly
