Pruning rambling rose

I have a demented rambling rose growing over an arch.  I cut it back quite hard last year, and had a magnificent display of flowers.  But it has now produced dozens of very long strong new shoots.  What do I do next?  I can't get my head round rose pruning!

I would remove some of the old shoots completely and tie up the new ones in their place.

I absolutely agree image   That makes three of us.

  • Would you remove any of the new shoots, or shorten them?  There are loads of them!

Tie the long shoots to the arch, bending them over gently to fit.  Only if the shoots are too long for the arch would I shorten them.  They're what's going to provide the flowers next year.

Sounds lovely, do you know what variety it is?

Perhaps you could post a photo on here?
