Leek problems

This year my leeks failed to grow properly resulting in pencil thick specimens only. Upon lifting I find the plants have a bulbous base approx 2 cm diameter, please can anyone offer advice.

    Are you sure you planted leeks and not onions?image

    lol I bought some leek seedlings earlier in the year, and half were onions image

    Thanks folks. I grew from seed but possibly could have been wrongly packeted, onion seed in leek packet. Thanks for your interest and reply.
