Little-Ann...I use linseed oil for the shafts of spade & fork (for all my wooden handled garden tools in fact) and an oily rag (usually used engine oil or whatever is at hand) for the metal parts.
Maybe worth noting that cricket bats have been treated this way for millennia. The linseed oil soaks into the wood and makes them pliable and less likely to break in heavy use.
