Just to add a note- in your opening post you were concerned about people being able to see in your front window so how about putting up some trellis in front of the hedge (ie on the inside) and growing some climbers on it so that you get some privacy when the hedge is low? Alternatively, create a bed/border there with some evergreen shrubs for all year round privacy, or, you could take out that part of the hedge and replace it with a more suitable one - evergreen or deciduous. Loads of varieties to choose from.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
