I've done my first gardening of the year too. Planted a tray of poor forgotten violas, 5 in a pot and 5 in the earth. They looked surprising healthy after the neglect.

I loved the flower fairies too. Still have the ones my mother had when she was a child, hardbacks, rather tatty now.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Oh help - fingernail chewing time here. OH just been out to get more logs for fires and the earth round the roots of a huge fir tree (not good with measurements, but must be equal to 5 storey building) is moving alarmingly.  Too far from our house to cause us damage, but on boundary with NDN.  Just been round to get them to evacuate their granny annex just in case.  Now just waiting rather helplessly ......

    feel a bit sickimage

Chicky, have you got any ropes that you could anchor the tree with? to at least make sure it falls in the right direction!!

Chicky, I know it doesn't help with your tree but we went through this one night with a big old willow. It would have been the road and electric wires if it had gone. But it swayed and creaked, then creaked and swayed but was still there for the tree surgeon weeks later.

Fidget - i think it is too late for that - don't want oh playing hero out there if it is going to topple any minute.  Nut - if it makes it through the night the tree surgeon will be called first thing tomorrow - looks like a fine day tomorrow then more (!!) gales and rain fri/sat.
