Clarington, following your Christmas Day revelation, I feel I should tell of a meal a newly veggie friend of mine had yesterday. She went to a well known French chain and had the veggie option, which came complete with pigs in blankets - real sausage wrapped in real bacon! The stuffing also was a touch on the meaty side. She said that she didn't quite know what to do, as didn't like to make a fuss and ruin everyone else's meal! I'd have sent it back myself! It really is shocking that, in this day and age, some places still think sausages and bacon are vegetarian!

Kef, could people bring a course, or side dish to help ease the pressure on you?

Good lord!! Bacon and sausages really is taking the Michael! I had people regularly offer me fish ("well fish isn't really an animal") and chicken ("its not cute and fluffy like a lamb") or use gravy made from meat juice ("oops I forgot") and in the case of one person "what if I cut it up really small so you can't see it?" Most bigger places are really good at providing vegetarian options (although how separate they keep the food when cooking to avoid contamination is a bit hit and miss) you just don't expect to hear about meals being that wrong! If you'd ordered a steak and got celery no one would think bad of you for returning it. I don't know how people cope if they're being a vegetarian because they genuinely don't want to eat meat (as I said mine was medication related so I didn't have any morals to fight for) :/

KEF - could your guests provide dessert? Or is that too much effort?

Its another fresh day here. No chance of much being done in the garden for a while as the weekend seems to be fully booked up. on 40 years until retirement...

Morning all. Freezing here but the sun is coming out, must get out and do some brutal hacking. I think some phsical violence will help to lift the blues.

We are away Christmas day so New Year will be our big meal at home. As usual I am much more interested in what wine we will be drinking. The festive season always seems like a good excuse to have some really nice wines.

Good morning all. Another cold and frosty one, but sunny.

Dug up most of that phygelius yesterday and planted tulips, did I already say that?

Chicky, the car isn't ready yet. The garage was too busy to start it last week. They said it would be ready end of this week, but I can't collect it as it's a 3 hour drive away and OH is busy with his choir Christmas show. I'm helping with wardobe and catering.

We have a joint of rare roast fillet steak for Christmas day. It's so expensive that it seems more of a treat than turkey. But this year my children are going to their in-laws so we are renting a gite the weekend before next to my son's and we are all going there, 16 of us. But I'll be bringing the beef as usual.

I'm not sure what adverts you are getting at the top of this page but I keep getting a woman in a pumped up bra. Does not look suitable for gardening at all! I think she needs to invest in a good sports bra and a jumper! Strutting around in her lacy knickers like that she'll catch her death of cold.

I get adverts for nice woolly jumpers from David Nieper.

The factory shops not far from here. It might be useful. Every jumper I pulled out of the wardrobe seems to have small holes in. Anti moth  stuff I think  I need.

I've got an advert for Triumph lingerie, should be for thermals me thinks.

Nothing in garden today but no more hospital eye visits for M for 3 months image and had a fun hour and half in local Co-op. image

Sausages, veg & Yorkshire puds tonight..could eat them now.

Just been into garage and I'm dithering, the wind is bitterly cold.

Think tonight is Adam's farm & Tudor prog' so will be snuggling up on sofa.

We've got chicken and leek pie - when I put the pastry on top of it.

Is that a push up pie ?

I've just been reading about the continuing food poverty & while I have rose tinted spectacles (on account of not having been there and only learnt about it through history books and grandfathers tales of the black market) it makes me wonder if encouraging people to grow their own as we did in WW2 would ever come back as an idea to get enough affordable food into the homes of those that need it (and those that need the exercise - hell lets get the obesity problem sorted too). I know not everyone has a garden but if those that did were encouraged and helped to supplement their brought goods with home grown whether it would ever be enough to make a difference.

Or would the moment the idea was mentioned it be shot back down over fears of health and safety in case someone didn't wipe the mud off a carrot?

    Strange thing society.
