Probably died, didnt over winter, they should be well up by now.

imageHi so I'm confused about this plant, I've been trying to read all the post but decided to just post a photo and ask about it. First, when I bought this plant it was beautiful, it had plenty of red and white flowers and full greenery. Now it's lost      all its flowers and is looking a little bare. I give it plenty of water as it's very hot here in the Houston , Tx area. Also, there are holes in the bottom of the planter for drainage. It gets pretty much full sun most of the day but I'm wondering if it'd do better in an area with partial shade? I did give it some liquid miracle grow fertilizer a couple weeks ago but it didn't seem to do much. Thanks for any help!

I think that specimen looks hungry and thirsty.   It should be full of leaves and flowers.

I suggest cutting it all back by half (take cuttings from the tips) and either planting it in the ground after giving it a good drenching or in a bigger pot with some decent compost.   Don't forget that, as a rule, potting compost only has food for 100 days max so you need to feed regularly.  This can be with a top dressing of slow release feed every spring or a weekly liquid feed between waterings.    Don't drown it but don't let it dry out either and it should recover and perform well.

I just found this group and am thrilled! Now maybe I can get some answers! I have the hot lips salvia plants in my garden, I trimmed them back this spring(mid April to be exact) I see no new growth at all, just woody stems, I live in Michigan, and this past winter was a cake walk weather wise. When do these plants start to regrow? I see nothing, but the roots are firmly in the ground still,

  • Hi Everyone, I too have a Hot Lips in a pot and after reading all your posts I think I may have started the beginning of the end for my plant I have it in a large pot, but will be planting it in the ground asap however last Autumn I was unwell and it didn't get pruned so I have lots of greenery but growing on very spindly brown branches, it has flowered but not in abundance as it used to should I give in and buy a new one? I do not have the facilities to take cuttings at the moment, can you help me please image

    Hi

Hot lips is about the hardiest Salvia there is,the recommended pruning regime is a light trim in the Autumn and when growth starts in the Spring to cut it back quite severely, or else you will get long shoots and few flowers!

The ones I have have fully red flowers at firs,t changing to red and white most of the flowering season and then fully white in the Autumn!

As hot lips is a vigorous grower, I top dress mine with garden compost and feed also with fertilizer, which probably makes them grow more vigorously, such is life!

    Cheers!

  • Thank you JIMMMY,

I will follow your advice and do aa light trim in the Autumn and then go for it in Spring very good advice from all contributors,

    Many Thanks,

  • I have lots of these in my garden, all in tubs though as we don't have garden as such, I have a small one which needs re-potting urgently, can I do it now? otherwise I am not sure it'll last the winter.

Yes of course.  Better to give it room to grow than to starve it or risk freezing its roots in a teeny pot.
