I have bluebells growing through gravel in the front garden, doesn't seem to cause them any problems and the weeds don't grow It is only a small area though, wouldn't recommend covering a large area with gravel without a weed membrane underneath.
Plants can be grown through a weed membrane though, if when you lay the membrane plan where your plants will be, cut holes through the cloth plant up then gravel ther area.
Thanks everyone for all your help. I ended up putting down some bark as advised and the garden looked lovely and I subsequently sold the house. I have been past my old house since then and the garden has been removed and block-paved for parking cars on, so worrying about my daffs ended up being a waste of time!
