Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Rubyyyy

in Plants
Hi all,
Want to buy my aunt and uncle a ruby wedding anniversary present. I have absolutely no clue when it comes to shrubs and flowers but I want something perennial with a ruby colour that would fit into a cottage/traditional style garden.
I was thinking of a rose or a clematis but have no idea of varieties.
Can you help please? Answers on a postcard.....

Weigela "Bristol Ruby" is very pretty.
Duh, I didn't even think to look for "Ruby Wedding" as a search item....
Readily admitting I'm not a lover of cottage gardens, what do you think of Aquilegia "Ruby Port"?
Aquilegia is a shortlived perennial/annual that breeds and self seeds prolifically. It is also a bit of a tart, so what you sow /plant won'tneccessarily be what you get the next yr, nor where you want it, and def not in the right colour. It is lovely in all it's forms, tho!
Are you looking for something ruby in name or in colour, and how permanent do you want it to be?
For repeated ruby colour, in a long lived plant/shrub with little maintenance, that would fit a cottage type garden I would suggest Photinia Red Robin or some of the latest cultivars of photinia.. It is a hardy shrub that can be cut back repeatedly without ill-effects,and all new growth is, I would say, ruby in colour. Of all of the plants that I can think of or have ever seen, I think this would be the most likely to fit your needs. There are newer cultivars with variegated leaves, eg,red/green, Yellow/ green, Cream/green , but they are not so reliable as Red Robin, and much less hardy.Areally good person to ask on the forum might be Verdun. he has all yr round colour in his garden. It really depends on whetheryou want flowers which are short-lived, or ruby colour all yr, or a mixture from different plants. I'll ask verdun to look at your post, I think he has the knowledge that you need.
The clematis isn't ruby coloured -soft pink. If you Google 'Ruby Wedding' Farmer you're bound to get a few and you could pick something that will flower at the time of the anniversary. I did that with my parents' Golden Wedding.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
