Crab Apple Saplings
Hi, we have planted three crab apple saplings this year and they are doing very well. They are now bearing, what looks to be a heavy weight of fruit which is arching the branches right over. Will this damage the branches?,would I be better off removing the fruit to help more root growth?. We will in time make crab apple jelly, but while the trees are young we don't mind removing the fruit earlier if it helps the trees.
Any advice welcomed.
Thanks Mark

I'd get them off before they break a stem
too late to think about root production, the tree has been putting it's energy into fruit production all summer.

Fruit now removed. Is it worth doing again for the next few years, but earlier on?. Which month?
If you're going to remove it do it as soon as it forms. I'd just thin it out a bit then you get the best of both worlds. It won't kill the tree leaving it in, just maybe slow it down a bit
