Very large buddleia - can I prune it right back?

When we moved into our new house there was a huge buddleia (we're talking over 8ft tall). Can I trim it right back without killing it? It blocks all the light at the moment and would love it to be reduced to a small shrub!

I have cut very large buddlejas to six inches. New growth then came from ground level. If you want to be sure, take a cutting off of new growth now. Its the wrong time of year if you read the textbooks, but it has worked for me in the past.
