my climbing rose has over 30 ladybirds on it ...i think they are harlequin bugs but unsure [look like the photo you have].they are eating all the green fly up.yummmmmmmmy.

    I would like to have a rose arch in the garden and wondered whether to buy wood or metal. has anyone any tips to offer?

    As usual my friend and I really enjoyed Gardeners World Live last Thursday, especially seeing Alan Titchmarsh, he is great, never any different so friendly and natural with everyone. Our one complaint is we feel the show is becoming a bit greedy moneywise, in these days when we all have to watch our pennies we feel £19 tickets £8 parking, petrol to get there, then charging to go into the theatres is a bit moneygrabbing

    can anyone tell me what is in my home made fertiliser, i made nettle fertiliser, soaked in water, uncovered, now have maggots with tails swimming about in it and they are clumped together like frog sporn , yuk! what and where do they come from. thanks.

    Those will be rat-tailed maggots - they're Hoverfly larvae (Eristalis sp.) and eat decaying organic matter in stagnant water - absolutely nothing to worry about!

    onehappy person - rimo is right they're rat-tailed maggots. They're not so pretty now, but if you leave them be they'll grow into beautiful hoverflies.

    This is a really interesting article as I have been overrun with lady birds this year and have spotted a couple of different ones in the garden. Now that I have read this and done some other research it looks likely that they could be harlequin ladybirds!
    I will go out tomorrow with the camera and take some pictures to compare on the net....

    I wonder if anyone can help?
    The Mimosa trees in my garden are infested with Cottony-cushion scale (Icerya purchasi). I am doing battle with insecticide but losing! It's also very expensive. I believe that Ladybirds will feed on these pests - is this true and, if so, how can I introduce these predators?
