Lifting Onions

Never sowed onions from seed before, always used sets. The question is should I lift them now even though the stems are still green or should I wait a while longer. All the sets are dried and in the shed for a week or more.

Are the stems still upright or have they bent over?

If they have bent over, you can encourage them to ripen by loosening them with a fork.

Differing varieties are ready at different times.

  • Thanks fridgetbones. A few of the stems have bent over but most are still upright. Variety is Ailsa Craig and they were planted out on 20 May. Just worried that the weather might turn cold after next week.

If some have started going over, then the others will probably go in the next week.

Weatherman says a heatwave for the next week. image

  • Hopefully they are right. Good dry warm week will get them there i hope. Thanks for reply fridgetbones.
