I live in the Fylde district of the North West and so far no waxwings although I believe there have been some in Preston. We have had Bramblings though.
Had a flock of approx. 20 of these in our garden in Dorking, afternoon of 29 Dec. They had a good go at our Sorbus "Joseph Rock," much to the annoyance of our winter-resident Fieldfare, which thinks it's HIS tree. He can see off the blackbirds but not a mob of Waxwings. Never seen these birds before but they are beauties.
On Christmas day 2010 we had a flock of 14 Waxwings visit our Sorbus tree, they have been back since and stripped the treeof all its berries!! What a sight it was to see, wonderful
i had a very distress sight in my i found 4 dead waxwings on my patio there was no signs of damage 2 them that was first time i had ever seenthem although there are a fine collection of bird in the garden i will keep a extra look out 4 any others
I'm very envious of all of you - I live in York and despite backing onto a nature reserve with an ancient hedge including hawthorn as its boundary I haven't seen one.
There was a lone redwing who visited for several days until all the hawthorn berries had gone. I assume he's now moved on to find the rest of his flock!
