In the sticks near Peterborough
Hoe,hoe, hoe.....
Failing hoeing or pulling up, you can always eat it.
the main problem with chickweed is that when you pull it out another one will grow in it's place, this is because the seed can lay dormant for 90 years or so and when a plant is removed a new plant will grow to fill the gap.that's why it looks as though it keeps coming back.
Lets face it all our soils are stuffed to overflowing with loads of weedseeds and other nasties. The soil has been around longer than man. It's all part of the fun of gardening....
Makes a good salad or sandwich filling, or chop it up and feed it to chickens - that's why it's called chickweed.
Failing that, hoe, hoe and hoe again.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
yes, vigilant weeding is the only way to stay on top of it - Chickweed is a very successful seeder, and if you havent got seeds in your soil you can bet that it will arrive courtesy of visiting birds, or on the wind. I find that a good deep mulch helps to keep it under control. Weed out any you can see then lay a mulch of a good two inches on top - this prevents light getting to the seeds so they can't germinate, as well as feeding your soil, if you use compost. But it's not a permanent thing.Weeds will spring up whenever your back is turned!
