potato plants

While gardening this morning found what looked like green tomatoes growing on my potato plants, there were potoes on the roots as normal but bunches of green tomatoes on the tops. What are they, are they edible and will the potatoes be ok to eat!!!!! Also I had a phone call off a relative and they have the same problem.

They have flowered and formed seed pods. They are  NOT tomatoes (although they are the same family), and are NOT edible.

The potatoes formed on the roots are fine to eat.

Very definitely not edible. they are poisonous. I would remove them asap, so that no one mistkes them for the real thing.

  • The seeds can be grown but it takes a few years of saving he tiny tubers and replanting them before you have a decent crop but you can end up with a new variety.  This is how new potato varieties are developed of course.  An interesting project but quite a lot of work and they could be rubbish!image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
