Hi Tina it all sounds the same as the RHS (Wood ash may contain useful levels of potassium (about three percent), a major plant nutrient associated with flowering and fruiting. However, the levels will vary depending on the age of the wood that was burnt; young wood such as from pruning will have higher potassium content than older, thicker branches.)
Liquid fertiliser spread on veg patch now will just wash out with the winter rains.
Save it in old 2Litre pop bottles, which will cope with any fermentation which might take place. store in a cool place and use next spring. Excellent stuff to give spring cabbages a boost in March.

What time of year is best? Can I add it to my compost much in Autumn or is it better in Spring?
That's muLch of course....
The ash will get washed out by Winter rain so better used in the Spring.

I water it when I'm building a compost bin - helps to kickstart the process
I use Universal Household Activator for the compost bin. Universally available and free. All boys under 30 love the game.
I should add that my compost heaps are well hidden from prying eyes.
