Crumbly cauliflowers

Can any vegetable gardeners help please?  - my sister has an allotment and has planted cauliflowers.  The plants have grown and look strong, but she says that the actual white centres look crumbly, and aren't compact.  She said they also have a strange texture, although couldn't exactly explain what this was.  She has about 6 plants I think, and they are all the same.  Has anyone any ideas?  Thanks.

  • Maybe they should have been harvested earlier - sounds as if the flower is beginning to flower, as it were.

  • I know what you mean Dovefromabove, and I thought perhaps they were bolting, but I'm assured not, as they are still growing but not overgrowing, if you know what I mean.  Thanks for your speedy response.  Very kind.

  • OK, not bolting then.

Are the curds yellowish rather than white?  If so they're probably suffering from too much of the lovely sun we've been having - not a problem we're used to having over the past few years, but a good tip is to bend a couple of leaves over the curd to protect it from the sun.  You can bend it so that the rib snaps, it won't cause a problem with just a couple of leaves.
