Tree Peony

Hello - me again!

About 18 months ago I put some tree peony seeds in a pot & have kept it in a cold frame over the winter period.  I've also kept it watered throughout the summer months, but nothing has emerged so far.  Am I being impatient, or should I expect to see some signs of life from the seeds by now?  Answers appreciated.

I was told they need to be put about 2 inches deep as soon as they are ripe which should be about now......germination times can vary. there may be signs of life the following spring or it can take up to 2 years so you may still have a chance

18 months ago would have been a spring sowing. Paeonies like to be sown fresh. But don't chuck it yet, as Reed says they can be slow. Also sometimes they just make a root the first year and shoots the next. It may have done that. Give it another spring

My  Peony seeds germinated after I had chucked them out after 2 years. I have a place where I tip all seed trays where the seed has not germinated after 2 seasons.  It's surprising what comes up in it. You have to have an idea of what the first true leaves look like though.

Do ame as nut says, and give it another season.

I'd have a look to see if it's still there bobbie. They're big seeds, easy to find. Do it gently. if you see a root, stop and put it all back. You'll get a shoot next spring. If the seed is still there and hard, don't cover it in a cold frame for winter leave it out.

It doesn't need water in summer if it hasn't made a root. If it hasn't germinated in spring nothing will happen before next spring. Rotting could occur

  • Thanks very much for the advice everyone.  The concensus seems to be to give it more time, so I'll give it another year & see what happens by then.  I put about six seeds in the pot & expected some results by now -  so fingers crossed for next year.
