which compost???

I have completely run out of indoor plant compost and wanted to repot my money plant (not sure what the technical name for it is!!?) anyway it's a succulent.  The only stuff I have left is outdoor tub and basket compost.  Is it really important to use indoor compost or can I get away with it - if it's half filled with indoor compost??

Many thanks, Judy

  • I find that Money Plants (crassula arborescens) are best planted in a soil-based compost as apart from anything else the weight of  it gives them some steadiness - some of them can get very top heavy -  when I had a big one I used John Innes 2 or 3 (whichever I had around at the time)  rather than a loose peaty or coir-based compost.

Just as a point of interest, I wouldn't repot houseplants at this time of year - early spring is by far the best time.

  • Thanks for the advice, I'll wait til spring now!!!!

By the way, as I've got your attention, I've just bought one of those huge bulbs Allium globemaster (I think that's what it's called), I've been told they need alot of drainage so I've mixed in gravel with my John Innes compost and planted it in deep within a pot, then watered it in.  Do you have any other tips as I'd hate for it to die on me?  For example do I keep watering it, or do I just leave it now within it's pot and just hope for the best? Also are they frost proof?
