I have no fruit in the top of the tree. There was plenty of blossom. I am putting this down to wood pigeon damage.image

  • The leaves on the plum tree have a white powdery stuff on it and plums are falling off the tree.  I do not like to spray when there are plums on the tree.  I need your advice please.

The leaves sound mildewed. This is worse when the tree has inadequate water.  Tey leaving a soaker hose running around the tree. It wont help the leaves for this year but may save the fruit.

Just as an update, I used a single Agralan M651 plum fruit moth pheromone trap this year (May-July), which has caught over 100 moths.

So far, my heavy crop of Victoria plums looks good.  I'll update again when I harvest.

I don't think you need to completely waste  the affected ones. I've been eating plums with maggots in all my life (though I prefer unmaggoty ones!) and I'm pretty healthy.  Cut them open, scrape out the poo and the maggot and give them a rinse under the cold tap. Or just scrape it all out with your thumb nail. If you're still squeamish stew them.

  • have a vic groaning with plums with pheromone trap and bayer ultimate bug spray have avoided the dreaded moth but this year some plums appear to have x cuts on them anybody any ideas

Or make plum chutney or Chinese style plum sauce Yum!

Is it too late to put a pheromone moth trap up now as the tree is full of fruit but the ones that are ripening early have a pink maggot inside.

  • In short, yes it is, Eliza.

I have been wondering just how many little grubs I have eaten. I didn't discover the grubs until I decided to freeze some plums. hmm don't suppose they have done me any harm- I hope!

I shall try pheromone traps next year and hope for a less meaty plum.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.
