Thank you for your replies, and the assurances it's not bamboo!
I'm not sure about it being millet though. We have a lot of millet going out into the garden as we feed it to our pet birds, and then the stuff they drop goes to the wild birds, and it ends up everywhere. I've got some currently growing in a patch where it went undetected, and although the leaves are similar, it is all growing up a couple of central stalks and is currently in flower. Mystery plant is growing many leaves from a central "C" and each stalk stops at a leaf.
Not sure what Salino is nutcutlet? Google didn't show me anything.

I think it is millet, probably dropped by a bird one way or another on your patch!

Ahaha! Oh silly me! Thank you for clearing it up!
Some of the big Miscanthus are a bit like that - like sugar cane. Could it be something like that?
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hmm, I don't know Fairygirl. It doesn't look quite right.
I've just been out and taken some more photos to show the base and the leaves and the hairs a bit better.
close up says not miscanthus. I doubt if this is a hardy perennial

But if it's an annual shouldn't it have gotten on with its seed production by now?
