    No point using any weedkiller at the moment, they only work when plants are in active growth.

    punkdoc is right. I've found the best weedkiller for brambles is SBK brushwood killer.

    Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

    You can cut the brambles etc back now but, as said, there is no point in spraying when they aren't actively growing.  Once they put on new growth in the spring is the best time to spray.
