My last cucumber on the plant (can't remember name) has grown at either end but has a very distinct waist half way down (see...not a spelling error 
) It's about 6 inches total length and firm to the touch even at the waist. What causes this - can someone give me a reason?

Might be partial pollination - the thin section may not have any seeds forming. A similar thing happens to sweetcorn with some kernels not developing and staying tiny if it didn't get fully fertilized when the silks were catching pollen from the wind.
