Not if we get a good autumn. If you've got some leftover seed and the space, have a go. They might be small by october, but still usable.
Great - I don't like them when they are too big anyway! Thanks
You could try covering them in a fleeced frame to extend the season if they have not grown big enough by autumn.
I have bought plug plants which are growing well but have poor germination in my direct seed sown beets so I shall be sowing some more in modules the first week of September as I'm away next week and then cossetting them and planting out under cloches if necessary.
OH and I love fresh beets cooked with onions, tomatoes, cumina nd chilli (Madhur Jaffrey) or baked with butter beans and horseradish or roast whole with garlic and thyme. Yum.
I tried an August sowing once and they came to nothing, They germinated and then just stuck there with a few pathetic leaves. They do need a certain amount of warmth, and below that level they just won't grow. But you probably have spare ground and not a lot to lose, so you could give it a try, in the hope of some more hot weather.
I've found that beetroot need mid- to high-teens C to develop properly.
Well am going to try sowing them in the greenhouse and see what happens - thanks guys will let u know how I get on.
