Hornbeam is good for 'evergreen' cover and for thin hedges and you can mix that with other hedging plants. If you wait a few months then you can get all these hedge plants for pence each bare root.
I say Pyracantha too. Go for the climbing one if you want narrow. It is stiif enough to support itself so would be good for a narrow hedge. Same with hawthorn will stand up to being cut to stay narrow....definitely not laurel!!!!!

Holly will grow tall and straight once it gets going and will form an inpenetrable thick and prickly hedge
