Dahlias - planting & storing
in Plants
I'm debating on trying planting my dahlias in open or mesh bottom pots placed on my flower bed this year, for 2 reasons.
I'm thinking I can start them off in the pots well ahead of wanting to put them out in the garden. and then just place the pots on the flower bed, allowing the roots to get down into the heavier soil, but the soil in the pot can be lighter and free draining, so as not to waterlog the tubers.
This will also allow me to lift the pots at the end of the season without having to dig up the flower bed, and I am considering storing the tubers in the pots in my unheated greenhouse over winter, without watering the soil.
on the storing point, I am a bit concerned that storing them this way may leave them vulnerable to slugs, that may be in teh soil, if I dont clean them off, as I do have a lot of slugs in teh garden. would sand maybe be a better option for storing? I tried newspaper a few years ago, but I dont have anywhere that is dry enough and they went mouldy.
any advice welcome, before the forum closes.
