🌙Wisteria - last chance saloon - first and last question about it now that forum is shutting down

clematisdorsetclematisdorset Posts: 1,348
I have on my wish list to one day grow a beautiful scented lilac wisteria in my current garden.

Could I have suggestions from experienced gardeners please? Maybe @Obelixx if possible?!

This is a future project, so that I can do some research on any named  suggestions. Thanks

Depends what you are growing them on ? I'd just pick a named variety that takes your fancy most of them have RHS awards . I've got Wisteria Sinensis Prolific on the small pergola its a Chinese variety and starts flowering just before the leaves smells divine, the Chinese ones look good on walls / building as well . Mine get nipped by the frost often with it flowering earlier than others

On my large pergola Wisteria Multijuga just plant last year , its has up to 1 metre long flowers ( reported longer )  and highly scented , its a Japanese variety which usually have longer flowers which are best shown off on a pergola / arch etc but I have seen Alba growing up a house . Japanese cultivars will have Floribunda or bracbrotys I get a bit confused between these two.

They is some from north american but they not as flamboyant as the others wisteria fruitscens  and tend to be smaller . To make things even more confusing they move quite a few japensese varietys into a hybrid group they have a X ( or formasa )  in there name but are excellent cultivars like Burford - caroline and others . I want Black dragon its a double and royal purple is the darkest one.

I can't help you with cultivars (I don't even know what mine is), but I have read several times that you should buy one that you can see is already in flower, so you can be sure it's a specimen that is going to flower.

I inherited my two big ones so have no idea what they are.

Go for whichever colour you fancy and buy it in flower so you can see it knows what to do.  Then give it a very sturdy framework - not trellis of wires.   Plenty of info on the RHS site about cultivars and how to grow.  They have a collection and a long wisteria arch at Wisley that you could go and see.

Think also about joining Gardeners Corner forum like many of us are doing.

I'm sure there are wisteria growers with plenty of knowledge on the other forum @clematisdorset, so probably best to look there now  :)

Not something I've ever grown, or wanted to grow, and you don't see many in this area, despite all the big houses with suitable walls. Not sure why.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
