Can anyone identify this… veg??

Hi there, I have taken over an allotment it only has 2 things on it currently, rhubarb and the image attached. Any idea what it is? I guessed frost damaged celeriac… but the foliage doesn’t look right, the leaves are almost fennel like? TIA Caroline :)

Fennel leaves smell like aniseed and are feathery in appearance. These leaves in the pics don’t look like fennel.

Its horseradish!  Looks just like mine at this time of year! The leaves will grow larger soon. When a bit broke off, did you sniff it? Mine are in pots, because I believe it can become invasive.  Is it contained in a separate bed?

We grew horseradish many years ago but never had the growth so HUGE. The smell surely will tell you whether it is horseradish or celeriac or fennel

Horseradish leaves look a bit like spinach.

Yes but only later when they unfurl completely
. I  agree that the smell of a cut piece would soon tell you.  BTW yes it IS  invasive   keep it restricted or it will take over.

If you zoom in close the leaves are all feathery, but yes no smell, so can’t be :)
  • @myclayjungle Ooh horseradish I didn’t consider that! I did have a sniff but I don’t remember it smelling! What does horseradish smell like? I will sniff again!
  • @Allotment Boy Yes it appears to be doing quite a good job of taking over, I will attempt to contain it!

@Breenfingers- I'll take a pic of mine tomorrow (weather pending!) to compare. They are called horseradish thongs and yours look much more established than mine. Mine are only 2yrs old and the base parts/thongs are much tinner than yours.

Here are mine, but as said, only 2yrs old in pots.  Yours look much thicker.  If you zoom into my pics, you will see the leaves come out looking feathery, but then open up and get much larger.
