Rooting Spirea cuttings in water

BiljeBilje Posts: 811
I’ve an old unnamed Spirea which in the main is left to its own devices. I’ve been simplifying my garden and thought if I can propagate it it will fill up some gaps. I root fuchsias in water and wondered if new shoots of Spirea would work too. Of course I can just try and see if it works

In my experience, spireas root very easily.  I used some cut-off branches as sticks once, and just shoved in the ground to support another plant they sprouted. 😁  Give them a go in water ... or  in a little pot with some multi-purpose compost, placed somewhere sheltered.

@ViewAhead, thanks, your thoughts mirrored mine. A couple of weeks ago I cut back my hardy fuchsias which I usually take soft wood cuttings from in mid Spring,  just after the pruning ( and shredding) I had the thought of trying hard wood cuttings despite it being the wrong time of year. There’s always another year. 😀
The Spirea has lots of spring growth on it so I’m hoping to get results from it, I’ll experiment and compare water cuttings and usual pot cuttings

The first post on page 56 of that thread has a list of plants that other posters here have successfully rooted in water.  Spirea is there. ✅
