    On my clay soil the hollow tine aerator was useless - the clay clogged it up almost immediately. Perhaps it was particular to the version that I have, or perhaps there is a sweet spot of at what stage of wet/dry to use it, but I doubt it. Stepping stones for the most travelled routes work well. Whether you aerate it or not, no lawn on clay soil is going to be happy if you traverse it regularly over winter.
