Sweet potatoes

these are my leftover sweet potatoes from last year.   Last year I picked out the slips and grew the roots out and planted them.   Why can't I just plant the whole potatoe? The roots are incredible even coming to the surface.

There is no reason why you can't plant the whole tuber as they are a perennial crop. In our climate they don't overwinter without protection so are usually grown from slips each year.
We do need a good summer to make growing them really worthwhile though.

They don't overwinter here either.   I had these in the pantry from last year

You can plant the whole tuber but you get more if you cut them in half or into slips.   They are par of the ipomea family - Morning Glory and bindweeds - so yes, incredible roots.

I grow them as trailing house plants!
