All is not lost, so don't worry It's been a little bit deep, but it's still growing so the best solution is to just re pot it, but put extra soil/compost below the root, so that the eventual level is only an inch or so from the top of the pot. It looks as if you can have a couple of inches of material in the bottom of the pot to get the right sort of level. You can then put a layer of soil/compost on there, to ensure all roots are covered, and then add a layer of finer gravel or bark. The bark is good because it also breaks down and is ideal for an Acer. You don't want a big gap between the final level, and the top of the pot. Mine is a little bit low, but it's been in that pot for a couple of years and will get a refresh this spring, or planted out. I haven't yet decided.
If the roots are going round and round rather than being nicely spread out, you can also tease them out before re potting it.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

What do we all think? It looks like I put a good two inches of compost higher than I should have done. You can see a few roots in the pictures.
