propagator mat

Just a quick question... (and maybe if I order one the answer will be in the instructions) but does it matter what surface I put one of these on, beyond it being flat? If I buy one, I want to put it on a melamine-coated shelf.

I have had a quick look around, the general consensus seems to be that the surface should be flat and that's about it.
Melamine should be fine, as far as l can see  :)

They are nice and warm but not hot so melamine should be fine.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

The solid blue polystyrene sheets used for insulation are handy too.

Thanks all. That's reassuring. I am throwing money at stuff that I will only need for a few weeks, at the moment, I fear...! I need to keep my aubergine and pepper seedlings warm in an unheated room for a while, now they have outgrown my variable temperature propagator. I was thinking of using the mat with a variable temperature thermostat.
