    If you're going to seed, it's always easier, and better, if the grass isn't too long, and you can give it a light scrape with a rake too, because it's helpful to broadcast some seed over the whole area and not just in the gaps. If you have a different seed from the one that's present, it'll still look patchy - but in a different way!
    It's a bit early for doing it here, as the ground isn't really warm enough yet, but it might be fine in your location.

    It's the cheapest way of approaching it, but you may still have problems later on. Hopefully that'll help a bit though.  :)
