Courtyard

Hello,
My kitchen opens up onto a large walled courtyard/lightwell, which at the moment it quite stark (white painted walls). I had planned to get some climbing plants in pots but have been told not to fix anything to the walls as it will compromise the tanking. Can anyone recommend a quick growing climbing plant that does not need a trellis? There is also a ledge with railings at the top, so I could plant some downward climbers in pots...Any advice is much appreciated! The courtyard gets some sun in the afternoon but is also quite shady. Thank you.

I've seen containers/ troughs with trellis attached. Would they work for you?
    In London. Keen but lazy.

You could use metal spiral poles - 3 in a container/large pot in the form of a wigwam.
Some annual climbers such as Ipomea ( Morning Glory ) or Thunbergia should give you some colour and interest until you decide on something permanent.
You could perhaps hang some pots from the railings.
Whatever climbers you grow will always need some sort of support.

A large pot with an obelisk in it could be another option. A climber that self clings without the need for support could damage your paintwork and tanking too. Your pots above might work though. Most climbers that can’t grow upwards will cascade downwards. Annual climbers like Thunbergia or Nasturtium, both quick growing, are possibilities.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.
